Aikido of Charlotte A 5th Dan visitor from NY....wow!

I received a phone call from an aikidoka who was visiting our area last week. I was out of town but when I came back on Monday to teach my class, he showed up for the 2nd time. I soon learned he was a 5th Dan, had been practicing for over 20 years and was a student of Yamada Shihan and Konigsberg Shihan. I was fortunate to have our senior students in class so… Continue

Serguei Cherstiouk Ryotetori

Afterthoughts after our Wed class If nage starts technique with wide irimi-tenkan, spinning uke, this allows all sorts of continuation. Uke supposed to be unbalanced, hence it is up to you where to lead him. So this type of beginning is good for practicing blending and variations. I think more interesting is to find out the optimal start when uke is sturdy and grabs you hard, without compromising his balance. And suppose he's heavier than you. Which movements are in your disposition? I see not… Continue

Serguei Cherstiouk Notes from David Halprin seminar 09/12/2009

Quasi-quote: "To disarm an opponent is easy. It is hard to do it right" Most notable directions: "Nage - apply your weight when moving uke. Feel uke's weight via his limbs. Uke - don't be too stiff nor too soft. Allow nage to work with your trunk" "What may seem as pulling in fact supposed to be leading. If you feel that you have to pull - change technique" "The beginning of any technique usually is a very simple movement, but errors on dan tests happen mostly at this phase. So don't skip pract… Continue

Aikido of Charlotte Bon Odori reflections - 2009

The Aikido of Charlotte demonstration at Bon Odori 09 in Charlotte went very well. Everyone did a great job demonstrating Aikido at their prospective levels. We had several hundred people watch and you could tell my the oos and ahhs that they were thoroughly impressed and entertained. It's a great joy to be part of this organization as great friendships have been cultivated on and off the mat, a good example was the get together we had tonight at my house celebrating. I look forward to next year… Continue

Serguei Cherstiouk ukenagashi

I was watching series of lessons from Gary Boaz. You can easily notice that he uses so-called ukenagashi a lot. Maybe half of his techniques start with this hand deflection motion. And it occurred to me that there is much sense in it. You may also notice that he demonstrates attacks from close position and without "telegraphing", which we used to enjoy. Without having enough time to react, irimi entry becomes doubtable, you can't move your body quickly enough. So you have to step back or aside.… Continue

Serguei Cherstiouk Matter of confidence

I was thinking about this matter recently. I can formulate the question in a bit provocative way: Why after 4 years of practicing I still don't feel confident when imagining a situation with a real threat? Once, quite a while ago, I attended karate classes, not too long, only about 6 months. And I remember that though I never applied it in practice, somehow I felt that I'd know how to move and what to do. It could be a false feeling, but still better than opposite. Another example - kendo. One o… Continue

Serguei Cherstiouk Kumi tachi from Eddi Hagihara seminar

It is only 10 first movements out of 20 (if I'm not mistaken), But even 10 seemed interesting enough. Start with both sides with sword unsheathed, in the scabbard, ai-hanmi, right foot, RF, forward. Attacking part 1) Draw sword, cut with one hand to the direction of uke's throat. 2) Shomenuchi, slide fwd 3) Yokomenuchi to the right, slide fwd 4) Yokomenuchi to the left, step fwd with LF 5) Cut from beneath, cutting uke's body with upward motion 6) Shomenuchi, step fwd with RF At this moment we… Continue

Serguei Cherstiouk practice all alone

Hi, just want to share one thing. The were two problems: a) not enough repetitions b) not enough people on Sat So I recorded audio commands to practice without a partner. Format: "Direction where attack comes from; Attacking hand; Name of attack; Name of technique". 5 Directions: North, West, East, NW, NE. You will hear something like "From North East left hand Shomenuchi Nikkyo Ura". I gathered 21 techniques for shomenuchi (this is counting omote/ura versions). For yokomenuchi - 19. You may… Continue
